Pizza Night Update

Some of you may be wondering, "how is Friday night pizza night going?". Well let me tell you... we have come a long way since those first pizza nights. We have had a few friends come over and tried a few new pizzas. Here are some of our latest creations and recipes for those who want them:

A mayonnaise based sauce topped with spinach, sun dried tomatoes, red onions, feta cheese, and kalamata olives (we left these off since I couldn't find them in the grocery store and added mushrooms instead). I was actually wasn't a fan of this one. It was too strong of a mayonnaise taste for me. I ate the pepperoni and olive pizza this week. We probably won't be making it again.

This one is basically just a variation of the BLT pizza we made the first week. It has chicken and avocado added to it. I have to say it is a nice touch. This is one of my favorites to make, but Shad doesn't like it as well because it doesn't keep for leftover the next day. I guess I will just have to eat the whole thing by myself so that there are no leftovers!

A spicy peanut based sauce topped with chicken, mozzarella cheese, carrots, bean sprouts, peanuts (we left off), cilantro, and green onions. This one was a bit of a surprise. It sounded super weird, but was actually really good. It got better the more you ate it.

So I saved our most favorite pizza lately for last. It is a Caribbean Jerk sauce topped with cheese, chicken, roasted red and yellow peppers, green onions, yellow onions, and bacon. We cheated a little and bought a bottled Caribbean sauce we found in the salad dressing isle (not a bad choice if you ask me). It was sooooo yummy. Shad now requests this one every week. Plus, it gave me a chance to learn to roast peppers. The peppers really MAKE this pizza.

More recipes to come, if we can think of any more.....

Budding Artist

(Picture taken in March 2010)

The top of my fridge has become a "catch all" for things that I want to keep for my kids (birthday cards, stuff from primary, ticket stubs, drawings they have done, etc...) Well today I got the motivation to go through the huge stack that has accumulated in the past year. In that stack I found tons of pictures that Haken has drawn. Haken has always been a little artist ( I guess it comes with the genes...ahem...daddy). There are some days where he doesn't get out a single toy, but has worn down every last crayon in his box so I have to peel the paper down. I actually don't mind having to scrub off all the crayon and marker that ends up on my table because I know he was just trying to create his masterpieces, he never does it on purpose. This kid is happy and content with a white piece of paper and a box of crayons, what more could a mom ask for? I thought I would scan in a few masterpieces to show you how far he has come in the last year. You can see the different stages that he has gone through, and how he has experimented with different things. You can also tell what we did during the month based on what his pictures are. He really is a creative genius. By the way, the titles are straight from him.

* You'll have to excuse the stuff you can see through some of the pictures. Because he goes through so much paper I usually let him draw on the back of my printer scrap paper :)

March 2010 (2 years 9 months)
I think this is the drawing he was doing in the picture up top. See how he lines up every pencil after using it. He gets his perfectionist habits from mommy and his drawing ability from daddy. Good combo I think.

June 2010 (3 years)
Using every color in the giant box of crayons...

"Football field"
October 2010 (3 yrs 4 months)

"Scriptures turned into a turtle"
November 2010 (3 years 5 months)

"Shapes"
November 2010 (3 years 5 months)

"Scriptures"
November 2010 (3 years 5 months)

"Christmas Tree"
December 2010 (3 years 6 months)

January 2011 (3 years 7 months)
This stage was probably one of my favorites! He had to use EVERY single crayon in his big box before he could call it complete.

"The letter "H"
January 2011 (3 years 7 months)

"The Brigham City temple"
January 2011 (3 years 7 months)

"Two Giraffes on Noah's Ark"
April 2011 (3 years 10 months)
Every family home evening he wanted to talk about Noah's Ark for a while. I see the beginnings of a name here too...

"A swimming pool with an orange road that the cars can go on"
April 2011 (3 years 10 months)

These next two are Shad's very favorite ones so I had to put both.

"Sand Traps"
April 2011 (3 years 10 months)

"Peach Tree....kind of tipping over because of the wind"
April 2011 (3 years 10 months)

"My baptism with mommy and daddy"
May 2011 (3 years 11 months)
Yes, those "flavor savors" are really supposed to be our noses. This is the first time I have seen him draw real people, or at least distinguishable ones.

"A City"
May 2011 (3 years 11 months)

"A big city....the United States one"
May 2011 (3 years 11 months)

And with that "Haken's gallery tour" comes to a close. I am excited to see what he will come up with next. What a creative little kid!

I had to throw in a few pictures from the last year of Haken creating with his Daddy. I think it is so cute that he wants to be just like him. Not a bad person to idolize if you ask me....

Mother's Day Reflections

It has been almost 4 years since I became a mother and yet it feels like I haven't known anything else already. When I was little I honestly just wanted to be a mom. Some girls would say that they wanted to be doctors or teachers, but I always knew I wanted to stay at home with my children. Now that I am a mom, although it is hard...most of the time...I haven't regretted my decision at all. I love being there for every little milestone and even for the little temper tantrums that happen. I am glad that I get to work through them with my children instead of someone else. I think there is something to be learned in every little thing that happens at home. Not to say that it is easy, but being able to build on every experience that I have with my children, even the hard ones, is valuable to me.
My little boys really are the sweetest things in the world. I couldn't imagine my life without them.

Haken has always been such a "people pleaser" and it sure does make things easier as a parent. He is genuinely trying to do what is right and wants to please us in whatever he does He is always looking for praise from us. I just hope that I give him enough sometimes. He probably deserves a lot more than I give him. As the first child sometimes I feel bad that he is somewhat of an "experiment." We don't know what we are doing, so I'm glad he is patient with us.

My little Jack is quite the little charmer already as you can tell from this picture. He is such a fun little baby to have in our home. He has a mild and happy disposition which definitely makes it easier as a mom. I can't believe he will be 5 months old this week. Time really does fly by faster the second time around. I guess as a mother it is my job to kiss him and squeeze him as long as he will let me (not that I could resist anyway).
Along with my reflections on being a mother myself, my thoughts have also been turned to other mothers I know that have made an impact on my life.

5 years ago last March, Shad's mother passed away due to colon cancer. I thought about her today and had a greater appreciation for what a fabulous mother she was. She raised 6 boys who all went on missions, got married in the temple, and have successful families. I didn't realize until I had children of my own what a great feat this really was. I only knew her for about a year since she passed away shortly after we got married, but I feel like I knew her much longer. She was an amazing woman who always spoke her mind, but what she said was always valued by everyone. She must have known what she was talking about after raising 6 boys into adulthood with such success. I'm grateful that she raised such a loving husband for me and a great father for my boys.

My grandmothers have also been great examples to me as mothers. My Grandma Evans passed away around the same time as Shad's mother. She is a woman that I will always admire and look up to. She was generous, tidy, and made the best potato salad in the world (she always left out the onions just for me). She was an amazing hand quilter and to this day her quilts are circulating throughout my house. I suppose that I got my love for sewing from her. She raised two great boys, (one being my dad) teaching them that if something is worth doing it is worth doing right in every aspect (I think her perfectionism also rubbed off on me). I love her and miss her often.
My Grandma Miller has become one of my great heros. She has raised 7 children (5 boys and 2 girls, one being my mom). I only hope that one day my home can be as hers where everyone who comes in calls her "grandma." She is the grandma that everyone only hopes to have one day. She is an amazing cook, comforter, and gives the best back scratches ever! (just back up into her and you will find out what I mean). I worked with her quite a few years at Bridal Image during my teenage years and I will never forget all of the times we couldn't stop laughing in the back room because of something silly. She has a tender heart which is the reason why neither my mom, nor I, can look at her when we are emotional...it becomes a chain reaction and we all start crying. She is a great Christ-like example for me to look up to. I am grateful to have her in my life and that my children can enjoy kisses from their "Grandma G.G."

Of course I saved the best for last being my own mother. In the past few months I have really realized what an amazing woman my mom really is. After my dad lost his job in September a lot of weight was tossed onto my mom as she worked to support her family and take care of the needs of my sister Jenni. In all the extra stress that she had, she didn't complain and took it one day at a time. She made time for everyone and never had anything bad to say. Her uplifting attitude gave me a perspective on what is really important, even when times are hard. She has been so patient with me throughout my life and always let me make my own decisions without criticism (which as a parent, I have learned is hard to do...) I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work with her throughout my teenage years at the bridal store. Even if that store doesn't make our family loads of money, it sure has brought me close to many of the women that I love in my life. I only hope that I can be half the mom that my mom has been in my life. Often times I find myself thinking "I sound just like my mom" or "my mom would do it just like this." I really think that isn't such a bad thing, in fact, I prefer it that way! I love you mom!

Tulip Festival

So, I'm really not the greatest blogger....I am trying to be better, but then I think "who really reads this but me anyway...?" I guess if nothing else it is good just to have a record for myself. Honestly this last month has been pretty crazy with it being my month for sharing time and preschool lessons, trying to keep my house decently clean, visiting family, and working on curtains for people. I am hoping that this month will be a little less frantic, but I doubt it since Shad has decided to start finishing our bathroom downstairs.

Anyway, I thought I would write a little about our fun trip down to the Tulip festival this last week with my family. I have LOADS of pictures, so I had to share at least a few of them.

My brother and his wife were moving from Spokane to Tuscan this week and stopped along the way to spend some time with us. They stayed the night at our house on Tuesday and then we had a fun day all together at the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point. After having a great afternoon there, we headed down to Salem for a farewell dinner at the Diamond Grill for Brandon and Megan. It was a long, but fun day. I'm sad that Brandon and Megan will be far away for a while, but glad that they will be living somewhere we can visit easily with lots of family already living there.

Side note: We saw President Uchtdorf from a distance while we were at the tulip festival. He was in the gift shop while we were buying our tickets. I wanted to take Haken to go over and meet him, but then I thought that he probably gets so annoyed with people bugging him everywhere he goes. I was excited because he is one of the only general authorities that Haken actually recognizes and he got to see him.

Gorgeous flowers. I wish my yard looked like this!

The boys at the beginning of the walk. We couldn't keep up!

They were obsessed with their maps and figuring out where we were. This is Taylor explaining it very seriously to Haken. (I love this picture....describes them perfectly)

Grandma explaining the map to Haken

Taylor showing me the "fishy food"

The tons of FISH that we fed!

Stopping to smell the tulips

Playing hide and go seek with Megan and Taylor

The only picture I got of Jack...he was asleep most of the time in the stroller. Thank heavens!

I think this is Shad's favorite picture. It looks like Haken is taking a leak...

Isn't this the cutest picture? We will seriously miss B and Megan. They are the bestest Aunt and Uncle. They are the only ones with enough energy for our boys!

All of the kids huddled around a little phone, playing games while we waited for our food at the restaurant. Who needs crayons...when you have a phone to play on!

Next time they see Jack he will probably be cruising around, so I had to take a picture so we could remember how small he really was when they left.
